HEALTHY KIDS DAY THIS WEEKEND!
Keeping Kids’ Minds and Bodies Active
Today, according to the 2013-2014 Sandusky County Health Assessment, 29 percent of children in Sandusky County are overweight or obese. In addition, the Ohio Department of Education reports in October of 2014, 24.2 percent of third graders tested were at or below grade level for reading. Furthermore, when the school year ends, the physical and educational health of many kids worsens.
To kick-start physical activity and learning now and throughout the summer – a critical out-of-school time for kids – on Saturday, April 25, the Sandusky County YMCA is celebrating Healthy Kids Day® with a free community event for kids and families. YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being, features activities such as games, healthy cooking demonstrations, and arts and crafts to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home.
“The Y is so much more than sports, swimming, gymnastics and a place for kids to hang out. We support families in their efforts to instill healthy habits at home,” said Bonnie Hanson, Senior Program Director, Sandusky County YMCA. “We know that it can sometimes feel like a challenge. So at Healthy Kids Day, we’ll encourage kids to stay physically and intellectually active all summer long, and give families tips they can easily replicate at home. It’s free and open to the community.”
In celebration of YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y offers the following tips to help families develop healthy habits:
- Try, try, repeat – There are many great tasting fruits and vegetables that many kids have never heard of, let alone tried. Grab a new fruit or vegetable and encourage everyone in the family to try at least a bite.
- Play around town – Challenge the family to play on a different playground every week. Identify playgrounds at a variety of parks; expand definitions of playgrounds to include nature trails, a nearby stream, and a bike path.
- Families at play for an hour a day – From walking to gardening, swimming to shooting hoops, make playful movement a part of your family’s day. To get 60 minutes of moderate activity throughout your day just add 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there.
- Foster a passion for reading – Read to and with your kids. Help children read at every age and every stage of their development.
- Make sleep a priority – Doctors recommend 10-12 hours of sleep a day for children ages 5-12 and 7-8 hours per night for adults. Sleep plays a critical role in maintaining our healthy immune system, metabolism, mood, memory, learning, and other vital functions.

WEEK 1 - JUNE 15-19 - SUMMER BLAST KICK-OFF
School's finally out! Kick off your summer right here at the Y. We'll have games, camp songs, crafts and a trip to the Rec Center Pool.
WEEK 2 - JUNE 22-26 - WE ARE FAMILY
Teamwork, Teamwork, Teamwork. This week we will be playing fun games that build each other up. There will be projects to be completed, crafts to be crafted and games to be played. We are the YMCA Family!
WEEK 3 - JULY 6-10 - WELCOME TO THE OUTBACK
Crikey! We're heading to the Outback! We'll be learning new games from the land down under, make our own boomerangs, maybe even go on our own crocodile hunt!
WEEK 4 - JULY 13-17 - MYTHS AND LEGENDS
Wizards, dragons, and demi-gods galore. we will be learning about different myths and legends this week. Whether it's a story from King Arthurs' court, or a tale of the great Hercules, they will come to life in camp this week through games, crafts and more.
WEEK 5 - JULY 20-24 - WANNA BE A ROCK STAR
Everyone is a Rock Star, and this week we are bringing it out of you! Forming bands, singing Karaoke, air-guitar contests are just a part of het fun we will be having!
WEEK 6 - JULY 27-31 - TIME TRAVELERS
Let's build a time machine. Every day will take place in a different time. Could be the ancient past with cavemen and dinosaurs, or the distant future on different planets.
WEEK 7 - AUG 3-7 - SPORTS CAMP
Play Ball! We will focus on a new sport every day. Baseball/Softball, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, and on the last day we will learn some fun and different sports like pickleball or topple ball.
WEEK 8 - AUG 10-14 - NATURE'S WRATH
Mother Nature at her finest! Be ready for the outdoors. Trail blazing, scavenger hunts, and more this week. Meet new friends from the area and team up to cool Nature's Wrath.
WEEK 9 - AUG 17-21 - SCHOOL DAZE RETURNS
School is almost here! It's been a long summer, and we are going out with a BANG! Fun camp games, songs and trips throughout the week, along with visiting friends from earlier in the summer.
Each weekly camp is $65 / Members, $85 / Non-Members and includes all the fun, including Lunch! For more details or to ask our Camp Counselors a question, contact Nate at NateM@frymca.org.
NEW FOR 2015!
The new Fred Durnwald Strength Training Center was made possible through generous donations from the Durnwald family in honour of the late Fred Durnwald. Thirteen new Magnum by Matrix strength training equipment pieces make up the new center. “The new equipment will provide greater ease of use for members of all approved ages and abilities.” says Lindi Cahill, Fitness Coordinator at the Sandusky County YMCA. “Particular attention was given to ordering equipment that will not only strengthen muscle groups, but also aid in the therapy and strengthening of corresponding joints.”
